Lithuanian literature is a relative newcomer to Europeans letters. The first book in Lithuanian was published in the sixteenth century. In the following centuries ir rapidly developed into a multifaceted body of work in all the classical and contemporarygenres. The aim o the proposed brief survey acquaint an outside reader with the measure of its artistic achievement as well as its main trends up to the present. We shall review its basic indigenous features as these emerged over time in relation to their interactions with neighboring European literatures.
We shall offer brief profiles of the most important writers, including their lives and works, noting their place and influence in further developments. Most of all, we shall try to assess their mastery of the written word. This survey of Lithuanian literature shall follow its fortunes from the earliest published texts to the period of national independence between the two world wars and into modern times.
